About the Caucus

Assemblymember James Ramos, Chair of the California Native American Caucus

Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon and Assemblymember James C. Ramos announced the formation of the California Native American Caucus in March 2021. Ramos was named as the chair of the new group. The California Native American Legislative Caucus was charged with increasing awareness and education in the Legislature about the culture, history and impact of various social issues on our state’s Native Americans.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge the ancestral homelands of the Nisenan, Southern Maidu, Valley and Plains Miwok, and Patwin Wintun peoples, of the land on which our state capitol sits today and where a monument to them now stands on the land we work on today. Even further, we recognize that all Native American peoples have a deep connection to the land and have made significant contributions to the broader community throughout California, our States, and the world.

We respectfully honor the land itself and that we continue to steward the land now and into the future. It is, without a doubt, very important to be inclusive and carry forward these traditional cultural teachings to reflect our commitment and relationships to the Native Americans in the state of California, and across the nation.
