Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples’ Week at the Capitol May 4 - 7, 2026

California ranks among the top five states in Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) cases, underscoring the urgent need for awareness, accountability, and action; the tragic story of Hanna Harris, a 21-year-old member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe whose disappearance and delayed law enforcement response highlighted systemic failures like jurisdictional confusion, lack of urgency, and data gaps, serves as a powerful reminder of the disproportionate violence Indigenous women and girls continue to face, which is why this issue so important: to honor those lost, uplift their stories, stand with impacted families and communities, and reaffirm a collective commitment to justice, visibility, and meaningful change.
